Thank you for your interest in the Chromebook beta! We're excited to get your feedback on our new platform availability and features before we release them to the general public.
Who can participate?
Any user with an Office 365 Education account can participate in the beta. Visit the Minecraft: Education Edition Get Started page see if you are eligible or to start the process to get an Office 365 Education account.
We’ll have beta versions for all Minecraft: Education Edition platforms, including Windows, MacOS, iPad and Chromebook!
Why are we releasing a beta?
Before we roll out new features and functionality to classrooms around the world, we need your help to ensure that everything is working as expected. We hope you and your students will try out the beta to help us uncover any issues so we can fix them before the official launch.
What should I know before joining the beta program?
Beta builds may have some instabilities. The FAQ will have a list of known issues, however you may be the first to discover a new one!
If you are downloading the Beta on Windows, please uninstall the current version completely before installing the new beta version. Also, you must export your worlds before you uninstall or they will be deleted.
Multiplayer will work across devices and platforms, but all players must be running the beta to play in the same worlds. Note that multiplayer is optimized for use in the classroom with all players on the same network. Review the How to Setup a Multiplayer Game at Home article for information about connecting from a home network.
Worlds opened in the beta cannot be reopened on previous versions of Minecraft: Education Edition. We recommend that you always backup worlds before opening them in the beta.
- You will need to add https://*.minecrafteduservices.com/ and http://education.minecraft.net as whitelisted domains on your network. Visit the IT Admin Guide for a full list of URLs to whitelist.
What’s in the beta?
Minecraft: Education Edition is now available from the Google Play Store as an Android app for Chromebook. This version of Minecraft: Education Edition offers the same set of features as other versions (Window, macOS and iPad) including cross-platform multiplayer.
Lessons are now tagged for easier search and discovery from the Library.
We'll be adding new features and content over the next month so check back for more info.
How do I join the beta?
How will I get the general release after the beta?
- Chromebook, iOS and Windows users will be automatically upgraded to retail with the next release.
- MacOS users will need to install the next retail release manually once it's available.
We hope you enjoy the beta!
